St John and St Giles Church, Great Easton
The ancient church bells have been rung continuously for hundreds of years not only by the local team, but by many visiting ringers from around Essex. The oldest bell dates to 1460 and 3 other bells were cast in 1665.
As the last reconditioning took place over a 100 years ago, the entire group of 6 bells were overdue a refurbishment, and in early 2024, the church committee agreed to commission contractors to undertake a complete dismantling and removal of the bells for re-tuning, cleaning and re-fitting, together with shot blasting the entire framework.
This project was costed at £45,000 and the committee set about fund raising this amount, a project which concluded in early 2026. Essex Heritage Trust were delighted to contribute the sum of £6,000 towards this sum, and the church held a celebratory service on 26th April 2026 during which the tower team rang some peels to great effect, and to the admiration of everyone involved.
