HARWICH MUSEUM LAUNCHES A NEW MAJOR EXHIBITION FOR 2025

Since Harwich Museum closed its doors for the 2024 season on 8th December the volunteers have been hard at work creating a new exhibition celebrating the heritage of Harwich’s Municipal Government.

Harwich Town Council permanently loaned Harwich Museum 23 Mayoral portraits and 12 Municipal Government Robes , some dating back to the 18th Century. 12 of these portraits and 4 of the gowns have been lovingly restored to their former brilliance and are now at the centre of the museums latest exhibit.

Steve Delves, one of the trustee’s of Harwich Museum explains how important this exhibition is for the town and its community:

“In 1604 a new charter was granted to the town by King James I.  This royal charter marked a milestone in the town’s history since it gave Harwich a new status having the rights, privileges and jurisdictions of a free borough.  For the first time, Harwich had a council to take local control of the town’s affairs. This rich history and heritage is so important to preserve and display for future generations to enjoy and discover how our town was formed. Harwich Museum is honoured to be able to share these wonderful items with our patrons. This display would not have been possible without the support and assistance provided by Essex Heritage Trust and we are all very thankful to them for making this exhibit possible.”
